Injury Epidemic in EU leaves trail of destruction
Every two minutes someone dies of a fatal accident in the EU and another 228 people are injured. 60 million people in the EU receive medical treatment as a result of an accident or injury. This is more than the population of Italy.
Injuries represent the fourth major cause of death in the EU. Only heart disease, cancer and diseases of the respiratory system claim more lives.
Whilst the scale of this expidemic is disturbing, the location of the majority of injuries may cause even more concern. In reality Europeans are more at risk of being injured at home or through leisure time activities than they are in any other location.
